In an unprecedented shift in global streaming dynamics, the Netflix original anime film Cosmic Princess Kaguya! has catapulted to box office prominence in Japan. Directed by Shingo Yamashita in his feature debut and produced by Studio Colorido, Studio Chromato, and Twin Engine, the film is a modern, visionary reimagining of the classic Japanese folktale The Tale Of The Bamboo Cutter.

Halfway through 2026, the film has amassed an astonishing $16.7 million (¥2.7bn) from 1.34 million admissions, making it the ninth top-grossing film of the year in Japan. Initially premiering on Netflix on January 22, it ranked seventh on the service’s global top 10 non-English-language movies in its first week. Subsequently released in just 19 Japanese cinemas on February 20 for what was intended to be a fleeting one-week run, the overwhelming demand saw the release expanded to over 100 cinemas and extended to a four-month run.

"Response after the streaming launch exceeded expectations, so we decided to scale up and launch a one-week limited theatrical run," explained producer Kenshi Nagasaka of Twin Engine. The opening day boasted a reported 96% seat occupancy rate, captivating audiences and prompting theaters themselves to request an extended run.

The phenomenon is particularly notable given the recent struggles of original anime films at the box office. To build anticipation, the team released social media videos featuring characters singing covers of popular songs, incorporating elements popular with Japanese youth such as Vocaloid producers and live streamers. Fans were further enticed by post-credits music videos and exclusive illustration boards, driving repeat viewership to catch subtle narrative nuances.

Looking ahead, Twin Engine continues to explore innovative distribution approaches. A further theatrical release of Cosmic Princess Kaguya! in 4D cinemas—including MX4D, 4DX, ScreenX, and Dolby Atmos—is scheduled for September 18, promising an even more immersive experience for fans.

Official Social Media Update: Netflix Anime officially celebrated the film's global streaming success on X (formerly Twitter).
