Oxford Study Reveals Stopping Weight-Loss Drugs Causes Faster Weight Regain Than Ending Diets

A landmark systematic review and meta-analysis from the University of Oxford has revealed that individuals who discontinue weight-loss medications experience a significantly more rapid weight regain compared to those who conclude behavioral diet and exercise programs.

Published in The BMJ, the comprehensive analysis encompassed 37 studies and 9,341 adults. Researchers observed that weight increased by an average of 0.4 kg (0.9 pounds) per month after the cessation of weight management drugs. For newer pharmacological interventions such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, the regain accelerated to approximately 0.8 kg (~1.8 pounds) per month, with projections indicating a return to baseline weight within roughly 1.5 years.

Behavioral Support vs. Pharmacological Intervention
Crucially, the rate of weight regain after stopping medications was faster by approximately 0.3 kg (0.7 pounds) per month compared to ending behavioral weight loss programs, irrespective of the initial amount of weight lost. While behavioral support combined with medication yielded greater initial weight loss, it did not attenuate the subsequent rate of regain.
Associate Professor Dimitrios Koutoukidis, senior author of the study, posits that this accelerated regain may occur because individuals relying on pharmacological aids do not necessarily develop the practical, sustainable dietary strategies required for long-term maintenance.
