UK Government Bans Microplastics in All Cosmetic Rinse-Off Products
The UK government has officially enacted a comprehensive ban on the use of synthetic microplastics in all cosmetic rinse-off products, effective immediately. The legislation, championed by environmental groups, closes previous loopholes that allowed certain biodegradable plastics and microbeads to remain in facial scrubs, body washes, and exfoliants.
This decisive action prevents tons of harmful microplastics from washing down our drains and entering our oceans, protecting marine life and securing the UK's leadership in global environmental policy.
The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA) has supported the ban, noting that the UK beauty industry has already successfully reformulated 95% of its rinse-off products using natural alternatives like ground nut shells, sea salt, and synthetic biopolymers. Non-compliant brands face severe financial penalties.
