But a compelling new study published in the British Journal of Nutrition suggests that your daily brew might be doing far more than just sharpening your focus. Researchers have discovered that a high intake of polyphenols—plant compounds abundant in coffee—may significantly lower the risk of mortality and recurrence in breast cancer survivors.

An 11-Year Nutritional Deep Dive

The longitudinal study followed 95 women diagnosed with breast cancer for an average of 11.5 years, meticulously tracking their dietary habits and angiogenesis markers. At the study’s conclusion, the data revealed a striking correlation: a higher intake of total polyphenols, specifically phenolic acids and lignans, was linked with lower breast cancer-specific mortality.

Tracy Crane, an expert not involved in the study, cautioned that while the research identifies an important signal, it does not establish that artificially increasing polyphenol intake will definitively prevent recurrence or extend survival. The findings are currently hypothesis-generating, and experts advise against consuming dangerous amounts of coffee or alcohol simply to chase polyphenol thresholds.
