LEE COUNTY, Fla. — A microscopic parasite is triggering an unprecedented public health crisis across the United States, with the national number of gastrointestinal illnesses now surpassing 25,000 this year. Federal health officials are scrambling to contain a multistate Cyclospora outbreak directly linked to recalled iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico.

The Florida Department of Health reported 352 confirmed and probable cases of cyclosporiasis from the start of the year through August 1. Miami-Dade County leads the state with 50 cases, followed closely by Broward (34 cases) and Lee County (32 cases). The surge in Florida mirrors a terrifying national trend: this year's infections have vastly surpassed the previous worst year on record, 2019, which saw only about 4,700 illnesses nationally. Michigan alone has reported more than 12,000 cases, including two deaths confirmed to be related to the parasite.

The Taylor Farms Connection

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that cases in at least 15 states are tied to iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico and supplied by Taylor Farms. The company initiated a massive recall on July 17 after the contaminated produce was distributed to consumers, restaurants, and retailers in at least 27 states. The recall explicitly impacted supply chains for major fast-food and retail giants, including Taco Bell locations and select Walmart stores.

Debilitating Symptoms and Prevention

Cyclosporiasis is notorious for its prolonged and exhausting symptoms, which include frequent watery diarrhea, severe stomach cramps, nausea, loss of appetite, extreme fatigue, and unexplained weight loss. Public health experts are issuing a critical warning regarding hygiene: alcohol-based hand sanitizers are entirely ineffective against Cyclospora. The only proven method to eliminate the parasite from hands is vigorous washing with soap and water.
