In a significant development for the global motorsport calendar, Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali has confirmed that the 2026 season is prepared to conclude in Europe if the final two scheduled races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi cannot proceed due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The pivotal announcement, made on July 31, 2026, comes as F1 organizers navigate the persistent geopolitical tensions that have already forced the relocation of the Bahrain Grand Prix to Malaysia for October. While the championship remains hopeful that the calendar will remain intact, a definitive decision will be made by mid-September.

The European Contingency Plan

Domenicali explained that logistical challenges, including "Brexit-connected documentation," make Europe the only viable alternative venue for the final two rounds. "I just want to confirm to you that if this will not be possible, the end of the season will be in Europe, because we cannot go in other places," he stated.

Italy's historic Imola circuit, Domenicali's hometown, has emerged as a leading contender to host the replacement event. The Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix venue previously returned to the calendar during the pandemic and remains a fully operational facility. However, racing in northern Italy in late November or early December presents obvious weather concerns, with average temperatures hovering between 6-8°C and a tangible risk of snow or heavy rainfall.

Weighing the Options

Despite the climatic risks, Domenicali dismissed concerns about the cold, pointing out that expected temperatures in Europe during that period are actually milder than the average conditions experienced during the Las Vegas Grand Prix earlier in November.

While Austin's Circuit of the Americas in Texas was considered a geographically favorable option due to its purpose-built infrastructure and better weather, F1 leadership has firmly indicated that European venues are the primary focus for any last-minute calendar amendments.
