In the sprawling, visually magnificent landscape of Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster The Odyssey, audiences have been captivated by the gritty, muscle-bound heroism of Matt Damon’s Odysseus. Yet, the most talked-about physical feat in the film doesn’t belong to the Hollywood A-lister, but rather to his exemplar of stunt work: Devyn Dalton.

Standing at just 4-foot-6, Dalton is a powerhouse of kinesthetic precision. When the film’s narrative demands that Odysseus and his crew battle the Laestrygonians—a terrifying tribe of man-eating giants—Nolan relied on practical verisimilitude rather than pure CGI. By placing the diminutive Dalton in the frame to double for Damon, the filmmakers successfully manipulated scale to make the enemy giants look truly colossal.

"The Greatest Arms I've Ever Seen"

Dalton’s sculpted physique and relentless training regimen have not gone unnoticed by her co-star. During a recent press tour, Matt Damon candidly praised his double, admitting that the muscular limbs seen battling mythical beasts on screen were almost entirely Dalton's. "It was almost 100% my arms in the movie, but you gotta give it up where it’s due," Damon joked, before adding that Dalton possesses "the greatest arms" he has ever seen.

For Dalton, the job is an exercise in total invisibility. She studies the script, the emotional motivations, and the subconscious physical tics of the actors she shadows. "When I am preparing for a role specifically, I’ll definitely figure out what I need for that character," she explained, noting that her routine blends martial arts, strength training, and intense script analysis.

A Long-Overdue Oscar Category

The ubiquity of Dalton’s work across major franchises—including her chilling turn as a child clicker in HBO’s The Last of Us and doubling for Amy Madigan in 2025's Weapons—underscores the physical toll and artistic merit of stunt design. Fortunately, the industry is finally catching up.

In a historic move, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that a new Oscar category for achievement in stunt design will debut at the 2028 ceremony. "It’s about time," Dalton remarked, expressing hope that she might one day sit in the Dolby Theatre. "I’m so excited for stunts to be recognized at that high level because of the amount of skill it takes to execute these stunts."

As The Odyssey continues to dominate the global box office as one of the highest-grossing films of 2026, Dalton remains grounded in the collaborative magic of cinema. "Everyone’s coming together to tell the same story," she said. And in Nolan’s masterful hands, it is Dalton’s unseen strength that helps carry the epic to its mythological heights.
