NEW YORK — Over roughly the last two calendar months, from late May through the start of Friday’s play, 63 Major League pitchers had thrown at least 50 innings. Of that elite group, New York Mets right-hander Nolan McLean ranked sixth in ERA (2.08) during that stretch, while Los Angeles Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto was not far behind at 10th (2.43).

Consider it highly notable, then, that these two formidable arms will match up on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Citi Field (7:15 p.m. ET on FOX), with Yamamoto starting for the Dodgers and McLean taking the mound for the Mets in a watershed midseason showdown.

Yamamoto, an All-Star who finished third in National League Cy Young voting last season, may be best known for the devastating splitter that he throws more often than any other pitch. Yamamoto’s ability to go deep into games is an ideal to which McLean strives—one of the primary obstacles, in fact, that has historically prevented the young Mets starter from taking the next step as a frontline ace. In part because he has occasionally struggled with his command, McLean had gone beyond six innings in only 25% of his starts earlier in the year, compared to 50% for Yamamoto.

For McLean, this adjusted strategy has resulted in a remarkable 0.75 ERA over his last four starts. "I try to use it as much as possible because I just want to go deeper into games," McLean noted regarding his increased reliance on his four-seamer. "Getting whiffs is great and all, but it’s really hard to get a ton of whiffs and go deep into games. You’ve got to have soft contact in there."
