COPENHAGEN — The global fashion spotlight often falls on the industry's largest conglomerates, but on Thursday, one of Scandinavia's most prestigious independent accolades shone a light on a smaller, highly artisanal label. Danish brand Berner Kühl was officially named the winner of the 2026 Wessel & Vett Fashion Prize during a ceremony held at the Orangeriet in Copenhagen.

The award, which was presented for the first time during this season’s Copenhagen Fashion Week, recognizes a Danish designer or label that demonstrates “exceptional originality, creativity and entrepreneurial vision.” Founder and creative director Frederik Berner Kühl accepted the honor alongside a 40,000-euro prize earmarked to support the strategic growth and development of his eponymous brand.

A Reward for Craftsmanship

In addition to the substantial financial grant, Kühl received a bespoke art piece created by Copenhagen-based multidisciplinary artist Esben Weile Kjær, whose practice heavily explores themes of identity, transformation, and contemporary culture. For the designer, the win represents a critical inflection point for the label.

“As a small brand, we have big ambitions, but we’re often limited by the resources we have,” Kühl said following the ceremony. “Winning a prize like this gives us the opportunity to take the next step and grow the business without having to compromise on what we believe in.”

Kühl noted that the award serves as a powerful validation of quiet dedication over flashy marketing. “It’s a reminder that you don’t have to be the loudest voice in the room to make an impact. It means a lot that the jury recognized the craftsmanship, the expertise and all the hard work and dedication that goes into every single product we create.”

An Intimate Selection Process

The road to the 2026 prize was highly rigorous. Earlier this year, the finalists—which included Bonnetje, Caro Editions, and O. Files alongside Berner Kühl—opened their studio doors to an international jury. Rather than relying solely on runway presentations, the judges evaluated the designers’ creative processes, working methods, and long-term business ambitions.

Nina Wedell-Wedellsborg, founder of the Wessel & Vett Fashion Prize, explained that this immersive approach allowed the panel to see beyond the garments. “By meeting the finalists in their own environments, the judges gained a far deeper understanding of how they think, work and build their brands,” she stated. “The caliber of talent this year was exceptional, and Frederik Berner Kühl stood out for his ability to combine creative excellence with a clear vision for the future.”

As Copenhagen Fashion Week continues to cement its reputation as a global hub for sustainability and emerging talent, Kühl’s victory underscores the industry's ongoing shift toward rewarding meticulous, independent craftsmanship in an era of mass production.
